A Powwow with Ryan and Kalena

Last night I had a portrait session with Ryan and Kalena. It was like nothing I have ever done before. You see, Ryan is Sioux Indian. (The good indians in Dances With Wolves. Haha.) He and Kalena wanted to dress in their authentic costumes for the pictures. Not only did this add so much dimension and interest to these images but I also got to watch Ryan dance the way he would at a powwow. It was so cool. The bells on his feet and the movements of his body drew quite a bit of attention and many stopped to watch as he performed for the camera.

I felt that this old selenium processing worked really well with these photos but I also wanted to show the color in the costumes. While I was shooting them I kept having visuals of Sitting Bull flash through my head. I guess I tried to recreate something along those lines.

Before we get to the pictures I thought I would post this awesome quote. I hope you'll read it. :)

You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the power of the world always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind in its greatest power whirls. Birds make their nests in circles for theirs is the same religion as ours. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves.
-Black Elk Oglala Lakota

The second half of Ryan and Kalena's session will be posted later.

Clint C

Emily had her baby!! Do you remember Emily? The super hot pregnant chick I took pictures of a few months ago? Click HERE for your reminder.

His name is Clint C and he is the most perfect little newborn I have ever seen. A perfectly round head which is always a big deal for me because of Sophia's sagittal craniosynostosis. His precious little features make you want to devour him because he is that delicious.

Now let me preface this post by saying that I have never claimed to be an awesome newborn photographer. I love taking pictures of babies but strictly for my own pleasure. It helps me to get a good healthy dose of baby to satisfy the yearning I sometimes feel when I think about having another one of my own. Instead of falling into that trap, I just prefer to admire them through my lens. At least for now. ;)

Enough of my blah blah blahs...lets get to the good stuff. Meet Clint C and his doting big sis Mila D.

What does the C and the D stand for you ask? Craig and Diana. However, it's really just C. and D. :)
Congratulations Emily and Mark on your beautiful bundle of joy!!

Justin Hackworth

Yesterday my mom, my daughter and I went to see Justin Hackworth. This was such a FUN experience. It was great for me to be on the other side of the camera. Now I know what you all go through! I stressed for weeks about what we would wear, I was in a frantic rush to get to his studio on time, and once he was ready to take pictures I was SO NERVOUS. Sound familiar to anyone? In fact, he wanted me to close my eyes for a picture and then had to ask me if I could make them not shake. Yes, that's right, even my eye lids were shaking. The best part about the experience (besides the incredible images from our shoot) was meeting Justin. He is such a cool guy, a very talented photographer, and a fast friend.

And now for that surprise I mentioned. He let me turn the tables on him! Now see what happens when the messer becomes the messee.
Muahhaaahaaa...

FYI...This image was focused directly on the camera which made it possible for me to see that he was set at f1.4 1/250 for this picture. :) Incidentally, I was at 1.4 1/160. Just for reference. I love knowing these little details.

To see his incredible images of us, visit his blog.
While you're there, be sure to check out his latest 30 strangers project entitled Mothers and Daughters. It is fantastic.

16+1=17

Probably the coolest mirror I have ever seen! This was taken just minutes before my photo shoot with Justin.

Stay tuned for a fun surprise.

Intrigued Much?

Yesterday Ashley and I went out on a very impromptu photo shoot. I couldn't wait to post these. An excessively larger post to follow soon.

A Few More From Boise

I don't think Spring Break could have been any better this year. We had such a nice weekend. I'm so thankful for my family!!!

We Played at the Park

The weather was so beautiful while we were in Idaho so we just had to spend the afternoon in the neighborhood park right next to my Dad's house. My kids did not want to leave...well except for maybe Isaiah. He could have played his DS anywhere. To put it mildly, the kid is obsessed with Mario Bros!

Little Drops of Heaven

I haven't been able to get these decadent little drops of heaven out of my mind since I had the great pleasure of enjoying them last weekend at the farmers market in Boise. Seriously, these were the best tasting doughnut I have ever eaten and the truth is that I could have downed the whole dozen and gone back for seconds and possibly thirds if there weren't other people around who would have inevitably judged me for it.
I'd like to purchase one of these doughnut making contraptions for myself. Then I could host doughnut parties and have you all over to share in the pure delight of extremely fattening deliciousness. Ahhh, in a perfect world.
